Week 1 – What is a Disciple

August 27, 2023

Series: Discipleship

Topic: discipleship

There are two interesting Hebrew words that I want to point out as we begin. The word “Tamid”, which means daily sacrifice, and the word “Talmid”, which means disciple. There is only one letter difference between Tamid and Talmid, and it is the letter lamed. The lamed is the shepherd’s staff, and it indicates following the shepherd. So, when we add the lamed to Tamid, we get Talmid, a disciple who follows the shepherd daily, continually.
The Greek word for disciple is mathētḗs, and the root of that word is “math”, which refers to the mental effort needed to think something through. This indicates that discipleship requires mental training.

However, discipleship is not merely a mental ascent, it’s a lifelong commitment, a daily practice, and a lifestyle of obedience. In the Bible, we see the disciples walking with Yeshua daily, sitting at His feet, and learning by watching Him. Discipleship isn’t simply learning about Yeshua, it’s about walking with Him and becoming like Him.
