If you go by OT God told the Israelites to kill everyone in their path to Canaan, they were punished for not fighting and killing everyone that was not following God.

Personally, I think the best commentary is the Bible itself. Prayerfully consider reading Genesis through Revelation a few times. It is a TREMENDOUS amount of reading, but I promise you will fall in love with Him and gain discernment to distinguish between what is truly, truly divine and what is man-made.
