1. a dyke, dam or mound to bar a stream, in plural, (Iliad by Homer); the phrase πολέμοιο γεφύραι seems to mean the ground between two lines of battle , = μεταίχμιον, (Iliad by Homer)
2. a bridge , to cross a stream, (Herdotus Historicus), attic; (Homer) also seems to recognise this sense in the Verb γεφυρόω. (ML)
