Series: Discipleship

Topic: Holy Spirit

MEMORY VERSE

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

– Acts 1:8

Read John 14, and notice that the Holy Spirit is given to those who love God and keep His commandments.

The Hebrew word translated “spirit” is “Ruach”, and means spirit, mind, breath, or wind. The Bible speaks about us being filled with the Holy Spirit. Think about how wind fills the sail on a boat and causes it to move. When the Holy Spirit fills us, we receive the power to move, to do what God is asking us to do. The Holy Spirit also directs our steps and causes us to walk in obedience.

“I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.”
– Ezekiel 36:27

The power we receive from the Holy Spirit is for the purpose of doing God’s will. Here we see it is given for boldness to preach the Gospel. In 1 Corinthians 12, the gifts are given for edification, healing, teaching, and hearing from God.

God enables us to do what He asks us to do. He doesn’t ask us to do anything without equipping us for it. The Holy Spirit is given to equip us to do what God has said.

We can walk in holiness because we have been equipped by the Holy Spirit to be able to resist temptation and do what is pleasing to the Lord.
