Day 60 – Grieve

October 25, 2023

Series: Discipleship

Topic: Holy Spirit

MEMORY VERSE

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”
– Ephesians 4:30

What does it mean to grieve the Holy Spirit? To grieve means to cause pain, sorrow, and mourning. Our sin causes the Holy Spirit to grieve. He grieves because it pains Him to see us turn away from holiness. He feels sorrow and mourning because sin leads to death, and He grieves for our death when we sin.
Isaiah spoke about rebellion as grieving the Holy Spirit.

“But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; So He turned Himself against them as an enemy, And He fought against them.”
– Isaiah 63:10

When we sin, we are rebelling against God, which grieves the Holy Spirit, because we are making ourselves an enemy of God.

In the Bible, the Holy Spirit is sometimes compared with fire. Fire burns up the garbage and chaff, it also gives light and warmth, and a refiners fire is used to strengthen and sharpen steel by removing all of the dross and impurities.

Thinking about the Holy Spirit as a fire, we are told “do not quench the Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 5:19) To quench a fire means to put it out. The two most common ways to quench a fire is by covering it with dirt or pouring water on it.

The Holy Spirit is Holy, and He is working to make us holy by removing our impurities, but we quench the Spirit by continuing to pour filth and dirt into our lives.
