MEMORY VERSE
“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
– Galatians 5:16
To walk indicates taking steps in a certain direction. We need to walk with the Holy Spirit, and take steps toward holiness and away from sin. When we walk in the Spirit, we do not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
We have spent a lot of time strengthening our flesh, but now we need to strengthen our spirit. There are times when we sin because of muscle memory. It’s a habit we have formed, and we have to be purposeful in breaking those habits.
“For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.”
– Galatians 5:17
The spirit and flesh war against each other. When two men fight, the stronger man wins. We need to strengthen our spirit so that we can defeat our flesh. If you don’t exercise your muscles, they will never get stronger. Likewise, if you don’t exercise your spirit, it will never get stronger. Exercise takes discipline and practice. The more you do something, the better you get at it.
We learn to walk in the spirit through prayer and Bible study. We learn how to listen to the voice of God and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit by intentionally seeking to hear from Him.
When we walk in the Spirit, we do not fulfill our lusts. This is how we gain victory over sin.
